March 2-3, Dave Nichols also attended the Tei User Symposium '99 sponsored by Triton/Elics Corporation. Dave, in conjunction with co-presenter Dana Wiese from the St. Pete office, gave a presentation entitled "Benefits of commercially 'off the shelf' manufactured PC data acquisition systems." A 30-minute synopsis was presented explaining how USGS Woods Hole and St. Pete perform multi-tasking field operations on large research vessels as well as small-boat operations using "off the shelf" PC-based digital acquisition systems.

The main emphasis was on the Delph II asynchronous digital acquisition system used by both offices for seismic acquisition and processing. There were about 100 attendees and approximately 8 technical presentations daily with worldwide representation from the marine industry. Some topics in the two-day symposium included "Timing and hydrographic data acquisition"; "Multi-beam integration and calibration of a survey vessel"; "Why digital data acquisition? An overview of seismic and sidescan sonar processing using digital data"; and "Industry trends and focus for TEI in the near future."
