Spectrolaserwizardry
On April 8, Gene Shinn served as native guide to Wayne Wright and Alex
Chekalyuk of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on a
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Twin Otter
from Air Operations Center, Tampa, piloted by Michelle Finn and Phil Hall.
Wayne is working with John Brock on measuring fluorescence in marine
environments from the air. Janet Tilden, Eckerd College intern from the
St. Petersburg Field Center, participated as photographer.
The flight was
over the Florida reefs and Lake Okeechobee to test water-penetrating
spectrographic Lidar. Water conditions were perfect and the laser beam
penetrated and bounced off the bottom in +160 ft of water. The
spectrowizards were happy to see different fluorescent wavelengths from
reef, sand, and sea grass. This could potentially open up a new way to
evaluate reef health from the air.
