International Conference on Scientific Aspects of Coral Reef Assessment, Monitoring, and Restoration—and Field Trip
Bob Halley, Bob Ginsburg, University of Miami, Harold Hudson, National
Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and Walter Jaap, Florida
Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), led 25 participants on a
pre-meeting field trip for the International Conference on Scientific
Aspects of Coral Reef Assessment, Monitoring, and Restoration. The group
visited 12 reef sites in the Florida Keys—relatively pristine reefs,
impacted reefs, several restoration sites, and the new Florida Fossil Reef
State Park that houses Gene Shinn's Key Largo Limestone cross sectional model
of the reefs and keys. Terry Edgar, John Brock, and Jennifer Rahn (1999 Sea
Grant Knauss Fellow working for Jeff Williams) were participants and lucky
recipients of three days of good weather and clear water.
The Conference drew over 400 participants from around the world with
particularly heavy participation from Australia and Pacific Island groups.
Caroline Rodgers, Ginger Garrison, Nick Funiccelli, Biological Resources
Division (BRD), Gainesville, and Jim Parrish, BRD, Hawaii, attended, as
did Jim Maragos, Fish & Wildlife Service, Hawaii. NOAA had about 25
participants including Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oceans and Atmosphere,
Sally J. Yozell, who spoke on the U.S. Commitment to Coral Reefs.
