Bring Your Kids to Work Day
On April 22, 1999, several children visited the WHFC. In the morning they informally viewed labs and visited with sponsors. In the afternoon, Chris Polloni hosted a multi-media overview of Stellwagen Bank/MassBay GIS. There was a show-and-tell on Sand Resources of the Long Island, New York Inner Shelf. Ann Swift described seismic data, and Rob Thieler explained sidescan sonar interpretations. Judy Commeau brought the children through the Electron Microscope Facility and showed them images of recently processed samples. The children also went to the Marine Operations Facility where Ken Parolski set up the "SEABOSS" (the video cam with a roving eye). The children could see themselves in a "real-time" display. Because the "SEABOSS" had been discussed during the morning's GIS demo as the bottom-sampler used to obtain pictures and sediment samples from Stellwagen Bank, the children recognized it immediately! Marinna Martini and Nancy Soderberg provided the final tours of the Sediment Transport team facilities and the Data Library.
