Below left: On May 18, Roney Rodrigues and B.J. Reynolds (SPFC) set up a roving GPS antenna for initialization on Coon Island near the Suwannee River for the Wetlands Project. Elevation data gathered from ground surveys will be used to complement LIDAR and satellite imagery in the evaluation of estuarine marshes and coastal forest retreat. Changes identified from historic navigation charts and recent satellite imagery suggest that both sea-level rise and human impacts contribute to alterations in this coastal wetlands system.

Above right: Amy Streck stands beside several toppled southern red cedars near Gulf Hammock, FL, during a May 19 survey of hammock elevations. In recent years, land owners along the NE Gulf have noted the decline of the cabbage palm on their seaward properties. It appears that the estuarine marshes are increasing in area at the expense of the adjoining uplands.
