Gulf of Mexico Cruise
Dave Twichell (WHFC) participated in a Gulf of Mexico cruise aboard the R/V GYRE during April 9-22 with co-chief scientist, Alan Cooper (Menlo), and technical support staff from Menlo and Woods Hole (Anton, Brode, Danforth, Foster, Hart, Irwin, Kooker, Nichols, O'Brien, Olson, Williams), and Standen (Huntec). The cruise focused on mapping the distribution of gas hydrates and trying to determine links between gas hydrates and surficial processes (mud volcanoes, chemosynthetic communities, landslides, etc.). Regional MCS and high-resolution Huntec seismic profiles were collected to map the distribution of hydrates and to determine their acoustic character. Two sidescan mosaics were completed. Unfortunately weather and winch problems did not allow the completion of all the sidescan mapping that was planned, and the large number of oil rigs that recently have moved onto the slope restricted access to some of the key study areas. Sidescan, chirp subbottom, and Huntec data were all archived to CD-ROM at sea, and within a week after the cruise, a digital sidescan mosaic and VERY preliminary interpretation had been completed and printed as a poster.
