Woods Hole Dive Team Deploys Samplers for WRD Plume Study August 1999 in this issue:  previous story | next story The USGS Woods Hole Field Center (WHFC) dive team (Dann Blackwood, Rick Rendigs, Ken Parolski, and Barry Irwin) successfully completed a deployment and recovery of passive vapor diffusion samplers in Ashumet Pond, Mashpee, Ma. during the weeks of June 14th and June 29th, 1999. This project was conducted in conjunction with Denis LeBlanc of Water Resources Division (WRD), Northborough, MA, in an effort to determine if and where the CS-10 plume originating from the Massachusetts Military Reservation discharges into the pond. There appears to be mounting evidence that the small TCE plume discovered "downstream" in John's Pond last year, in a similar co-op project with WRD, may be part of the CS-10 plume. One hypothesis is that much of the CS-10 plume discharges into Ashumet Pond but a small amount just misses the pond and crosses the isthmus to John's pond. The project in Ashumet Pond was larger in scope than the project last year at John's Pond and consisted of USGS divers burying a total of 245 vapor sample bottles in the pond sediments at 213 locations along 11 lines radiating from between 800 to 1300 feet from the near shore. Following a two-week sampling period during which volatile organic compounds dissolved in the pore water diffuse through polyethylene-covered bottle openings into air within the bottles (until an equilibrium is reached between the liquid and vapor phase concentrations), the samples are recovered by divers. The vapor-phase concentrations of the targeted compounds are then analyzed "on site" with a gas chromatograph. A synthesis of these results along with the current hydrologic status of the plume is currently being undertaken and will be presented by Denis LeBlanc (WRD) to members of the USGS in Woods Hole in the near future. in this issue:  previous story | next story
