CMG Scientist in the News in Southern California
CMG's Brian Edwards was quoted in an article in the July 21st issue of the Press-Telegram, a Long Beach, CA, newspaper. The article describes drilling by the USGS to collect core samples at the Long Beach Water Reclamation Plant. The core samples will reveal much about what the region has looked like over time, what type of seismic activity has occurred in the area, and the condition of the groundwater table. The drilling is part of a large research effort that includes scientists from CMG, the Earthquake Hazards Team, the National Geologic Mapping Team, WRD, the Water Replenishment District of Southern California, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, the Southern California Earthquake Center, and the City of Long Beach. An important goal is to discover how salt water has infiltrated the groundwater table at Long Beach. CMG's participation in the study is part of the CMG project "Geologic Framework Studies in Coastal and Marine Ground-Water Systems," co-directed by Brian Edwards and Frank Manheim.
