Florida Keys Geology Presentation
Gene Shinn gave a talk on July 22 on Florida Keys Geology to 25 middle school science teachers as part of the Hillsborough County (Tampa) "Science Summer Workshop," organized by the Florida World Museum of Natural Science. The subject was Keys geology and groundwater problems. And yes, he poured water through a piece of Key Largo Limestone to make the point about sewage, permeability, and leakage. Speaking of porous limestone, Dave Wagner designed a beautiful support and case for Gene's now famous flushing-toilet model. The model toilet, complete with appropriate electronic sounds, is fitted with a water pump and set on a slab of Key Largo Limestone that rests on top of a small aquarium. By working the handle, the viewer is presented with a memorable example of limestone permeability. Last week, the display was shipped to Washington, D.C., where it was used in a Congressional committee meeting to demonstrate the special problems of the Florida Keys and to help obtain federal Funding for sewage-treatment plants in the Keys.
