CMG Earthquake Research Featured in San Francisco Bay Area TV Program on Tenth Anniversary of Loma Prieta Quake
"Future Quakes—Unlocking the Mysteries of Bay Area Earthquake Faults" will
be broadcast by KPIX (Channel 5), a CBS affiliate in San Francisco, at 6:30
p.m. on Sunday, October 17, 1999, the tenth anniversary of the Loma Prieta
earthquake. Created by Steve Wessells and CMG's Patrick Hart and Tom Parsons,
this video offers highlights of USGS earthquake research now underway in the
San Francisco Bay area. One of the featured projects is BASIX, Bay Area Seismic
Imaging eXperiment. The show describes how CMG has run seismic studies on
San Francisco Bay to determine whether or not the San Andreas and Hayward
faults are connected deep in the crust. (For those of you who won't be able

The half-hour program
also describes projects conducted by the Earthquake Hazards Program, including
trench studies to determine earthquake recurrence intervals, cone-penetration
studies to map susceptibility to shaking and liquefaction, and a project designed
to make shaking-intensity maps available to emergency personnel within 2
minutes of a Bay Area earthquake. If you're in town, check it out!
