Woods Hole Field Center Visitors
Don Forbes and Bob Taylor from the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) in Halifax visited the WHFC during the Arctic Coastal Erosion Workshop that was held in Woods Hole from November 2-4, 1999. They met with Rob Thieler, Richie Williams, and Debbie Hutchinson and discussed, among other issues, studies on sea-level rise, sea-floor mapping, polar erosion and the GSC participation in the SwissAir aviation disaster off Nova Scotia. Dave Beecy, Director of the Office of Environmental Systems Technology in the Office of Fossil Energy of the Department of Energy (DOE) in Maryland, visited Woods Hole on November 16, 1999, to discuss issues of greenhouse gases and carbon sequestration in the oceans. His primary contacts were Bill Dillon, Bill Winters, Eric Sundquist, and Wylie Poag from USGS and investigators from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). Dave also toured the GHASTLI facility. His lecture on "Carbon, CO2, and Sequestration" generated some good discussions on ocean chemistry, CO2 clathrates, global chemical fluxes, and budgets. Tony Paulson, Chief of the Marine Chemistry Branch at the NOAA NMF Sandy Hook Lab, visited Marilyn ten Brink, Ellen Mecray, and Brad Butman at the WHFC on October 26, 1999. Discussions focused on integration of data and samples from the NOAA contaminant studies in the New York Bight with those gathered by the USGS. Time-series samples that NOAA collected in the Christiaensen Basin from 1990-1998 will be transferred to the USGS, and analytical results will be merged to better understand the temporal and spatial variability in contaminant transport. Future opportunities to merge environmental data were also discussed.
