Two New CMG Web Sites: A Wealth of Information on Tsunamis, and Virtual Flights Through Multibeam Mapping Data
Recent additions to the Pacific Seafloor Mapping Project Web site are two fly-by movies of (1) the floor of Lake Tahoe on the California-Nevada border and (2) a reef platform in West Flower Gardens National Marine Sanctuary in the Gulf of Mexico. Visit the Fly-by Quicktime Movies of Selected Multibeam Surveys page to cruise through multibeam bathymetric data collected by Jim Gardner. In Lake Tahoe, you will fly throughout the lake, viewing a large underwater debris avalanche measuring 200 m in height, as well as large debris blocks scattered into the deep basin by the avalanche. In West Flower Gardens, you will fly by a modern living reef platform in 15 m of water depth. These movies allow for visualization techniques that help researchers understand the spatial distribution and relative depths of geomorphic features that may be more difficult to interpret from traditional geologic maps.
