Blue Lobster Bowla Regional Competition for National Ocean Sciences Bowl
Jessica Cote (WHFC) participated in the Regional Competition for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (Blue Lobster Bowl) that was held in Boston at the World Trade Center last month. It was a very intense, but fun and exciting day. The morning was a round-robin competition, and the top teams then went into the double elimination rounds in the afternoon. There were two 8-minute halves in each round where two teams went head to head and tried to answer as many questions as they could in those 8 minutes. Although it started off as a friendly competition, the heat rose and the students got bolder, challenging the science judges and moderators (mostly from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution/WHOI). It was anticipated that the National winner for the past 2 years, the team from Lexington, might be defeated in the finals by a team from Cambridge, but the Cambridge team stumbled under pressure and lost on the last question of the day. So the Lexington team will proceed to the Nationals in Washington, DC, in April. It was really great to see so many kids interested in the Ocean Sciences. Representing Cape Cod were two teams from Nantucket and one from Barnstable.
