Oceans Day 2000
John Ogden of the Florida Institute of Oceanography in St. Petersburg organized Oceans Day 2000 to showcase ocean research conducted by an alliance of Florida universities and research institutions, including our neighbors at the University of South Florida (Tampa and St. Pete) and the Mote Marine Laboratory (Sarasota). This year for the first time, the pool was expanded to include private universities, such as the Florida Institute of Technology, and Federal representation from the USGS.
Our exhibit focused on coral research conducted at the St. Petersburg Field Center. The exhibit was well received and people particularly liked talking to Gene who had conducted much of the research. We were pleased to learn that representatives attending from utility industries and private research foundations were quite knowledgeable about some of the complex issues the Coastal and Marine Geology Program is studying and were supportive of our efforts. On the return flight, we had a good viewing of atmospheric dust Gene Shinn's current scientific interestwhich wrapped up a good day.
