Coastal Erosion in the News

USGS scientist Abby Sallenger (SPFC) gave a telephone interview on coastal
erosion/storm impact issues to CBS radio on June 27th and provided a number of pre- and post-storm
photos and other graphics to ABC News. Peter Jennings of ABC News presented a report on coastal
erosion in the U.S. on that evening's news. The media interest was generated by a FEMA report,
released the same day, that concludes that about 25% of homes and other structures within 500 ft of
U.S. coasts, including the Great Lakes, will fall victim to the effects of erosion within the next 60 years.
ABC was particularly interested in a USGS map of part of the North Carolina coast showing shorelines
dating back to the 1850s and a modern shoreline based on lidar data, all superimposed on a USGS
photo-orthoquad.
