News from the 9th International Coral Reef Symposium (the Olympics of Coral Reef Research)
Gene Shinn and Christopher Reich of the St. Petersburg Field Center (SPFC) organized separate mini-symposia for the 9th International Coral Reef Symposium, held October 23rd-27th in Bali, Indonesia. The symposium was attended by approximately 1,500 participants from around the world. Chris advertised, organized and co-chaired a session on effects of groundwater and surface-water pollution on coral reefs. Gene organized a session on effects of African dust on reefs and co-chaired a day-long session on the geological aspects of coral reef growth. Bob Halley and Kim Yates (SPFC) gave oral presentations in different sessions. Bob spoke on corals in turbid waters and Kim presented results from the SHARQ experiments in Hawaii. Her work indicates that increased CO2 will not lead to 'naked corals,' i.e., corals without skeletons. The unexpected dissolution of reef sediment keeps sea water around coral reefs alkaline and charged with dissolved calcium carbonate so that corals are likely to be unaffected if CO2 continues to rise. The session on dust had standing room only and was called the "buzz" of the meeting.
