Long Island Sound Research Conference
Larry Poppe, Valerie Paskevich, Marilyn ten Brink, and Ellen Mecray (WHFC) attended the Long Island Sound Research Conference in Stamford, CT, on November 17th and 18th. This was the fifth bi-annual meeting, with 135 attendees. There were representatives from the CT Department of Environmental Protection, researchers from Wesleyan University, Ralph Lewis (the CT State Geologist), and others. The USGS team distributed copies of the recently published Thematic Section of the Journal of Coastal Research describing the work in Long Island Sound. Larry Poppe and Valerie Paskevich also demonstrated and distributed the new CD-ROM (Open File Report 00-304) containing geo-referenced seafloor mapping, bottom photography, and geochemical data on surface sediments. On Saturday, Ellen Mecray presented the results from the surface-sediment geochemistry and the Clostridium perfringens analyses. The USGS and other attendees indicated it was a positive and productive conference.
