National Geography Awareness Week Includes School Tours and GIS Day Open House
The U.S. Geological Survey's National Wetlands Research Center hosted gifted students from St. Landry Parish high schools for two days to learn about GIS (geographic information systems) technology. The students created maps using both computer and traditional cartographic methods by using data from three different years to show changes in Vermilion Bay marshes. They also toured the mapping and remote-sensing labs at the center. In addition, the Center teamed up with C.H. Fenstermaker & Associates, Inc., a mapping, engineering and environmental consulting firm, to sponsor an open house, "Discovering Acadiana Through GIS: Environment, Business, Public Service" for GIS Day, November 15th. Acadiana represents a cultural area/region in southwest Louisiana that includes several parishes. Government agencies and companies displayed interactive exhibits showing the capabilities of GIS, from locating businesses, routing school buses, to mapping a favorite fishing hole. Features of the event included special presentations, door prizes, a catered reception, and T-shirts and buttons for the volunteers.Participating were Louisiana's Departments of Natural Resources and Wildlife and Fisheries, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Department of Defense's Fort Polk/Camp Beauregard. Local city agencies included the Lafayette Economic Development Authority, Consolidated Government (Utilities and Public Works), and Utility Systems, and John E. Chance & Associates, another mapping, engineering and environmental consulting firm. The University of Louisiana (UL) at Lafayette's NASA/UL Lafayette Regional Application Center, Center for Analysis of Spatial & Temporal Systems, and Center for Advanced Computer Studies were also represented. The NASA/UL Lafayette Regional Application Center uses state-of-the-art methods to provide NASA-based (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) technologies such as satellite and other remotely sensed data to the general public.
