Senior Leadership Team Members Visit Woods Hole Field Center
On November 6th and 7th, the WHFC hosted five USGS representatives from Reston: Kathy Clement, Deputy Director; Bonnie McGregor, Eastern Regional Director; Dave Russ, Eastern Regional (ER) Geologist; Ernie Brunson, ER Geographer; and Cathy Hill, Northeastern Hydrologist. Two visitors from the WRD office in Northborough were also present: Wayne Sonntag, District Chief, and Lynn Bjorklund, NMD New England Liaison.
After an informal breakfast with some WHFC staff, including Mike Bothner, Jeff Williams, and Debbie Hutchinson, the morning began with a seafloor-mapping demonstration in Red Brook Harbor. Bill Schwab, Tom O'Brien, and Dave Nichols conducted a short cruise on the R/V Rafael to demonstrate the Interferometric side-scan sonar system in an area where one of the toxic plumes from the Massachusetts Military Reservation reaches the coastline. For those folks who could not fit into the boat, Rob Thieler gave an overview of mapping and sea-level issues. With cold, gray November weather, all participants were happy for the subsequent meeting with Bob Gagosian, Director of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, in a warm conference room. Bob and the group discussed more than 30 years of USGS-WHOI collaboration as well as USGS participation in the new Oceans Institutes that WHOI is planning. A Center meeting followed with Kathy Clement speaking on Strategic Change and Dave Russ speaking about New England issues. More than 70 people attended the Center meeting and contributed to an active question-and-answer session. The morning ended with lunch in the Gosnold conference room and a "quick" tour of the buildings. The visitors then departed for an afternoon field trip at the Mass Military Reservation with Denis Leblanc of WRD. A full-day trip on Thursday to the Cape Cod National Seashore, where Jeff List gave a demonstration of his SWASH work, finished the visit.
