CMG Program Webmasters Meeting
 |

The proposed redesign for the CMG Program homepage.

Six Webmasters from across the Coastal and Marine Geology (CMG) Program met
in St. Petersburg, FL, from January 24th-26th. This is an annual meeting to
improve coordination across the many Web sites in the Program and to enable web
developers to swap technical information. Attendees this year were Trent Faust
and Heather Henkel (St. Petersburg), Molly Groome and Rex Sanders (Menlo Park),
and Valerie Paskevich and Jim Robb (Woods Hole).
This year's meeting produced several important decisions:
- Program-Wide Web Page changes-To give a more seamless appearance to
the Program's Web Pages, all CMG pages will have a sub-banner with a link to the
Program home page and a Program-wide search button. Top-level web pages will have
an additional sub-banner with Program-wide topic links, based on a small database.
- Program Web Site review-The CMG Program Web Site,
http://marine.usgs.gov/,
will be updated and a new authoring and review process will be used.
- Program ArcIMS Server-ArcIMS serves GIS coverages on the web. Woods
Hole hosts the Program ArcIMS server at http://kai.er.usgs.gov/, which is run
by Valerie Paskevich. We will add more GIS coverages to the small number
currently hosted.
- Section 508-Section 508 is a new law requiring all Federal web pages
to be accessible to people with disabilities by June 21st, 2001. Most old web pages
that conform to USGS guidelines do not need changes.
- Interactivity-Most of our web pages are static. We will use more
"flashy" technologies, as long as a plain version is available. One good example
is the SOFIA virtual tours at http://sofia.usgs.gov/virtual_tour/.
