Woods Hole Black History Month Recap
On February 2nd, Dr. Daniel Pauly from the Fisheries Centre, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, spoke on "The Importance of Thinking Big: Addressing Large-Scale Issues Through Marine and Fisheries Biological Research." On February 9th, George Spivey, Falmouth Affirmative Action Officer, spoke on "Africans and African Americans: Travelin' Through Time and Space." On February 22nd, John Reed, President of the Cape Cod Chapter of the NAACP, spoke on "The Impact of the MCAS Exam on School Districts Throughout the Commonwealth: What's in it for Cape Cod." The highlight of the final evening was a Harambee (a wonderful, ethnic, potluck feast) with music by the Grant Langford Quartet and an exciting book and picture display. The local community attendance was vastly increased by youth at the Harambee (Swahilli: coming together), and it was quite a sight to see the older group interact with a much younger group. People have already expressed interest in next year's celebration!
