CMG Program Data Management Workshop
The third annual Coastal and Marine Geology Program (CMGP) Data Management Workshop was held February 27th- March 1st in Falmouth, MA, at the Ramada Inn Falmouth Square, a few miles from the USGS Woods Hole Field Center (WHFC). This year's participants included more than 40 people from USGS Menlo Park (MPFC), St. Petersburg (SPFC), Woods Hole, and Reston, and one observer from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The first day began with presentations from around the Program. John Haines (Acting Program Coordinator, Reston) gave an overview of the Program perspective on Data Management, followed by an extended discussion on roles and priorities. Debbie Hutchinson (Chief Scientist, WHFC) reviewed the Knowledge Bank project and the recent workshop "Making USGS Information Effective in the Electronic Age." Brad Butman (WHFC) reviewed the Regional Synthesis project. We then broke up into seven sub-groups, each focused on a major data type: GIS, Imagery (Photos and Videos), Location and Navigation, Reflection Seismology, Samples and Cores, Sidescan and Multibeam Bathymetry, and Time Series. For the remainder of the workshop, the sub-groups concentrated on developing Data Product Resource Guidelines (DPRGs). DPRGs focus on one important data product (typically an Open-File Report CD-ROM) and break down the major tasks, human resources, expenses, and time required producing the product. DPRGs are intended to assist principal investigators and CMGP management with designing and managing research projects. Each of the data-type sub-groups made substantial progress on one or more DPRGs. While the data-type sub-groups were meeting, the Data Management PIs—Rex Sanders (MPFC), Rob Wertz (SPFC), and Jim Robb (WHFC)—worked on the overall CMGP Data Management Plan. The CMGP Data Management Plan, including all DPRGs developed to date, will be released in mid-April. We planned several efforts for outreach to research projects and involvement in the project proposal cycle to implement the plan. All workshop participants thank Jim Robb, Nancy Soderberg, and other WHFC staff for hosting this workshop. The next workshop is planned for February/March 2002 in the Monterey Bay area near the developing USGS Pacific Science Center.
