Supervisory Workshop Held in Woods Hole
The employees of the Woods Hole Field Center participated in a very informative and exciting supervisory workshop from March 21st-23rd. Mary Diana Szulc from MDS Consulting, Inc., conducted the workshop that included two sessions, one for 'all hands' and one for 'supervisors.' Mary Diana presented the DiSC Personal Profile concepts. (Prior to the workshop, employees filled out a 'personal profile' questionnaire and were then provided a lengthy report describing their individual behavior style at work. The DiSC tool measures your Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness at work). The 'all hands' sessions included topics on motivation, setting goals, prioritizing activities, communicating effectively, team building, managing work/team expectations, and transforming attitudes. (The team-building session involved separating the group into three teams. Each team was given a set of tinker toys and each was to create a 'large, stable structure.' This turned out to be a fun and informative team-building exercise). The 'supervisor' sessions included topics on feedback, coaching, skill practice, negotiation and delegation. (The skill practice or role-playing activity involved forming several groups of three people each: one person played the supervisor, one the employee, and one the observer. A typical workplace scenario was then read, acted out by the supervisor and employee, and participants made observations on how to improve communications). There was a very good turnout and a lot of positive feedback on the concepts and material covered and on the shared experience!
