Teachers from the Institute for Science Instruction and Study Visit WHFC
Susan Hageman, Program Director of the Institute for Science Instruction and
Study (ISIS), and 28 high school science teachers from across Connecticut visited
the Woods Hole Field Center (WHFC) on March 3rd. The teachers are participants in the
ISIS, established in 1985, which is an intense, two-year, interdisciplinary program
aimed at advanced-degree science teachers interested in bringing new discoveries,
technologies, and ideas into the classroom. Bill Winters and Dave Mason (WHFC)
conducted a tour of the WHFC facility, including a visit to the GHASTLI lab (Gas
Hydrate And Sediment Test Laboratory Instrument) where a presentation of laboratory
and field gas-hydrate studies and soil-mechanics phenomena was given. Various devices
used to determine engineering properties of marine sediment were also demonstrated.
The ISIS group viewed video clips of:
an at-sea gas-hydrate recovery (taken by Tom Lorenson, Menlo Park),
a force-12 storm weathered by the Ocean Drilling Program's JOIDES Resolution,
formation of gas hydrate using MBARI's (Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute)
submersible, and
outcrops of gas-hydrate mounds in the Gulf of Mexico.
The teachers were provided with numerous fact sheets and enjoyed learning about
ongoing work performed by the WHFC as depicted in hallway posters. Because each of the
28 teachers lectures 100-130 high school students per day, the information gained by the
Woods Hole visit reached over 3,000 students the following week.
