Five teachers from the
Falmouth, Massachusetts school district display their surficial geologic interpretations of the
"study area," based on sidescan-sonar imagery, grab samples, and bottom photographs.
They were very pleased to wear their USGS hats!

The WHFC GIS Users Group participated in the Falmouth school system Science Safari, an after
school program designed to introduce K-12 teachers to the scientific organizations and facilities within
the Woods Hole community. The GIS Users Group designed a geologic mapping exercise for the visiting
teachers, in which the teachers were split into three groups, each with a hand-held GPS receiver, a
laptop running ArcView GIS, and a navigation interface to monitor the current GPS position. A
sidescan-sonar image was used as the "basemap" within the GIS. Twelve "sediment locations"
were placed around the WHFC campus, each containing a sediment sample and accompanying bottom
photograph.
The teachers were to navigate to each sample location, describe the sample, and enter the
data into a "logbook." The ultimate goal was to generate an interpretive surficial map of the
"study area" based on the sidescan-sonar imagery and sediment data. Despite inclement weather,
which moved the "study area" to the WHFC conference room, the event was a great success and fun
was had by all!
Jane Denny and VeeAnn Cross made introductions describing the USGS Coastal and Marine Program
and various seafloor mapping activities. Sarah Fuller and Tammie Middleton gave an overview of the
Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary Mapping Program, and the various geophysical and
sampling tools utilized throughout the Program. Ben Gutierrez, Erika Hammar-Klose, Jenna Hill, and
Jill Rozycki aided the teachers in their mapping projects.
