Farris New National President of Communications Group May 2001 in this issue:  previous story | next story Gaye S. Farris of the USGS National Wetlands Research Center in Lafayette, La., is the new President of the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC). She has previously held the office of Secretary and Vice-President of the organization, a national not-for-profit professional network of Federal, State and local government employees who disseminate information within and outside government. Its members are editors, writers, graphic and video artists, broadcasters, photographers, information specialists and agency spokespersons. NAGC is best known for its annual communications school, communicator of the year award, and its Blue Pencil and Gold Screen Awards. The school sponsors such speakers as Helen Thomas of UPI, DeeDee Meyers of the Clinton administration, and Bob Edwards of National Public Radio. This year's school featured Linda Edwards, Texas spokesperson for then-Governor George W. Bush, Commander Hal Pittman, spokesperson for the USS Cole terrorist attack, and former Boulder County district attorney Alex Hunter, who handled the JonBenet Ramsey case. Communicators of the year have included Steve Davis, spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, who handled the Columbine High School shooting, and James Brady, President Reagan's former spokesperson. This year's award went to John Wright, acting director of the U.S. Department of the Interior's communications office. Also, this year's school featured several environmental communicators, including spokespersons from Loyola University's Center for Environmental Communications and the Environmental Protection Agency as well as editors and graphics artists from the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation and USGS.
