USGS and School-to-Work Partnership Going Strong
School may have be out for the summer but students and teachers keep coming to the USGS National Wetlands Research Center through the School-to-Work Partnership. The School-to-Work Partnership is a nationwide initiative that uses the workplace and the classroom and activities that connect the two to prepare students after high school graduation to move successfully into the workplace or to pursue further education and training. On June 5th, over 75 high school students visited NWRC to talk with USGS scientists about their research and career choices. Amphibians, wetland plants, invasive species, neotropical migratory birds, water quality, habitat mapping-no matter what scientists are studying, their message to students came through loud and clear. "Love what you do!" Teachers also had a chance to work alongside these enthusiastic USGS scientists and geographers during a week long (June 5th-8th) educator internship at NWRC. Two middle school science teachers and one high school biology/chemistry teacher worked in the laboratories, greenhouses and in the field and will take their experiences back to the classroom to prepare students better for the world of work and lifelong learning.
