Garald G. "Jerry" Parker, Sr. (1905-2000) is rightfully recognized as the "grandfather" of Florida
groundwater hydrology. Among his many significant accomplishments, he was the first to predict and
caution us on serious future water shortages due to phenomenal growth along much of Florida's fragile
coastline. His seminal USGS Water-Supply Paper 1255 (Parker et al., 1955, Water Resources of
Southeastern Florida, with Special Reference to the Geology and Ground Water of the Miami Area)
still is unmatched and widely referenced today. Jerry Parker had a legendary 30-year USGS career
(1940-1970) that prepared him for a senior scientist position (1969-1975) with the Southwest Florida
Water Management District (SWFWMD).
The Southwest Florida Water Management District, the Lowry Park Zoo, and the U.S. Geological Survey
have established a memorial site located in the Green Swamp northwest of Tampa and just south of Dade
City. On June 21st, 2001, a group of people consisting of family, close friends and colleagues gathered
at the Green Swamp to dedicate the site in memory of Jerry and in honor of his many accomplishments
and achievements. Peter Swarzenski and Mike Stallings (CMGP-St. Pete) joined Carl Goodwin (WRD-Atlanta),
John Harsh, Ben McPherson (WRD-Tampa), Tony Gilboy (SWFWMD), and many others at the dedication.
Heather Henkel (CMGP-St. Pete) composed an informative and artistic memorial Web site
http://sofia.usgs.gov/memorials/parker/.
More information on the Parker memorial dedication can also
be found at the following SWFWMD site:
