![]() Above: Alan Cooper, winner of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) Medal for International Scientific Coordination, gives acceptance remarks at the SCAR Open Science Conference. [larger version] Alan Cooper, a scientist emeritus with the Coastal and Marine Geology Program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), was awarded the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) Medal for International Scientific Coordination, 2010. Cooper was recognized for his work over the past 25 years in initiating and overseeing the Antarctic Seismic Data Library System (SDLS) for Cooperative Research, and in helping with the coordination, compilation, and analysis of seismic data collected along the margins of Antarctica. Cooper was further recognized for his work in editing and publishing the proceedings of SCAR's 10th International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Sciences in 2007, with more than 100 peer-reviewed reports and 200 extended abstracts, all published online in advance of the conference and in book format less than a year later (http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2007/1047/ and http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=12168). Cooper received the award in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the SCAR Open Science Conference in August 2010 (http://www.scar.org/awards/). Congratulations, Alan!
