USGS biologist Guy Fleischer (BRD, Great Lakes Science Center) and geologists Peter Barnes (Menlo Park) and James McNeal (Reston) traveled to Chicago on April 25th to brief scientists from EPA and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) on the USGS initiative for lakebed mapping in the Great Lakes. We presented information on the issues, technology, logistics, and products anticipated from application of innovative technologies for lakebed geologic, habitat, and ecosystem mapping in the Great Lakes. The presentation detailed the scheme for assessment and quantification of benthic fish spawning and nursery habitats, geomorphic and geologic framework assessment related to ecosystems, climate, lake level, and the biologic and pollutant history recorded in sediments.

The goal of the meeting was to introduce the EPA and Nature Conservancy partners to the USGS initiative and to stimulate feedback in context of support and recognition of opportunity to these organizations from the proposed work. We believe we were successful in adding two collaborating groups to our initiative planning effort. TNC has developed some very impressive ecosystem/habitat analysis tools using Arc-Info and Arc-View based heavily on physical parameters including geology and DEM. They are applying the analysis to the Great Lakes and to most of the rest of the U.S. coast. At present they are using mostly U.S. Army Corps of Engineers physical data for the analysis.
