  • Lidz, B.H., and Hallock, P., 2000, Sedimentary petrology of a declining reef ecosystem, Florida reef tract (U.S.A.): Journal of Coastal Research, v. 16, no. 3, p. 675-697.

    • Petrologic analyses of surface sediments collected shelf-wide in the Florida reef tract in 1989 show that the highest percentages of coral grains and largest amounts of dead-coral substrate are coincident and that both occur off tidal passes rather than land. Coral-sand production thus accelerates in direct proportion to the amount of weakened or dead-coral substrate available for bioerosion.

    • Comparison of the 1989 data with analogous data from studies by others indicates that algal and molluscan grains had doubled in the upper Keys between 1956 and 1989 and that coral grains had increased notably in the lower Keys and had tripled in the middle Keys during the same time. These changes are consistent with field observations that populations of macro-algae and grazing molluscs have proliferated in the presence of nutrification. Results correlate with a published conceptual model adapted to reflect biogenic sedimentary components that shows effects of increasing nutrients on benthic organisms in a reef ecosystem and how that population will change.

    • Coral-grain percentages are good bioindicators for relative health of coral reefs.
